Australia Revises PTE Score Requirements for Immigration – New Rules Effective from 7 August 2025.

Effective from 7 August 2025, the Australian Department of Home Affairs has introduced revised English language test score thresholds. These changes impact all four skills—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking—across all visa English proficiency levels: Functional, Vocational, Competent, Proficient, and Superior English. PTE Academic remains one of the key accepted tests, with updated score requirements per skill.

1. Functional English

Used for secondary applicants to avoid paying the English Language Charge (e.g., student visa dependents).

• PTE Academic (each skill): 24 points

2. Vocational English

Required for certain employer-sponsored and skilled visas.

• PTE Academic (each skill):

  • Listening: 33

  • Reading: 36

  • Writing: 29

3. Competent English

Minimum threshold for applying for General Skilled Migration (GSM) pathways like subclasses 189, 190, 491.

• PTE Academic (each skill):

  • Listening: 47

4. Proficient English (10 points on GSM points test)

Higher proficiency that offers additional points in migration scoring.

The highest proficiency tier, garnering maximum points.

Important Note for Test Takers

These updated scores apply to PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Results from tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 remain valid under the previous thresholds until their expiry (typically upto three years), provided they fall within the appropriate visa validity window.
